Reported by Kelly Haywood
It has been reported that a member of the public who was walking through Hangman’s Woods sadly discovered the body of a unidentified individual in a underground pit known as Denehole.

No details of the unidentified individual have been provided to the public, but this is not unusual in these cases. Police will be checking local missing persons records and other data to try and establish the unknown person’s identity before appealing to the public.

Detective Inspector Lydia George said: “Utilising specialist equipment and skills and working with our partners, we recovered a body yesterday.
Work is underway to establish who they are and the circumstances around how they came to be in the deneholes and how they died.
I want to thank the community around this area for their support, particularly local businesses who kindly provided refreshments.
We will provide further information as and when we are able to.”
There is not normally public access to the chalk caves (underground pits) as some have been filled in, but requests to enter the caves can be made with the local authority. The site is protected due to the species of bats, Myotis Daubentonii, Daubenton’s bats. (Click the Image below to learn more about Daubenton’s bats )
