Could this facial reconstruction released by the Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University help solve the mystery to the unidentified man found in Wales?

It was just after 8:00am on Thursday the 17th of October when a member of the public was out walking their dog near the Claerwen reservoir in a remote part of Wales when they spotted something peculiar.

Upon further inspection the dog walker realized it was the body of a man laying face down, wearing only a wetsuit. Tests showed that the unknown male may have entered the water sometime in mid summer of 2024.

Due to numerous factors a cause of death could not be determined. due to no cause of death being found and the fact the unknown man had not yet been identified the case will remain open until the public can help identify him.

It is not known why the unknown man may have visited the Claerwen reservoir is completely unknown. The area is not exactly dormant but it is rural, the vast landscape is attractive to those wanting to experience the outdoors by hiking , the reservoir also does not permit swimming and warns visitors of the danger.

The unidentified was a white European male, who stood at 6ft tall, around 30 – 60 years old and weighed 202-220lb which could mean he was large or well built, the wetsuit itself was in the size XL which was a zone 3 wetsuit which is advertised for triathlons and cold water swimming but is also a very affordable product for someone wanting to practice water sports safely as part of a swimmers safety plan

Police searched the area using dogs, drones, helicopters and SAR search teams to locate any of the missing mans belongings but could not find any trace of him.

Police searched through databases of known missing persons cases and wanted individuals to see if they could finds a match but no match could be found

after a fruitless search the case was passed to the Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University to help create a digital reconstruction of the unknown mans face. When cases are passed to the the Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University they know that police are in severe need of assistance.

Although the unidentified male had no scars, marks, or tattoos that could be found, there was a peculiarity in his teeth.

Professor Caroline Wilkinson

Professor Caroline Wilkinson explained: “We see a middle-aged man, who has got an unusual dental pattern that probably would be recognizable.

“His teeth don’t meet and close all the way across.

“So it’s what’s called an open bite, and that means that his lips would have been more open at rest.”

Professor Caroline Wilkinson is a anthropologist and academic, who specializes in forensic facial reconstruction, she is also the director of the Forensic Research Institute and a author of her book Forensic Facial Reconstruction which I can assure you is definitely a book I want to read and study. This books seems to be only available on amazon here.

Its times like these that we must remind ourselves to stay in touch with our loved ones, if we are making plans to do extreme sports , we make sure we let someone know, we follow safety advice and we do out research.

Don’t swim here!

Please remember to check local weather, let someone know where you are going and if possible, don’t go alone. Your life matters and so do the countless lives of search and rescuers. Keeping yourself safe, you can keep others safe. Also FLOAT TO LIVE, beware of cold water shock, know the dangers to avoid the dangers.

Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting

Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting, who has led the investigation, said: “When the discovery was reported to us, we immediately got to work on establishing who this man was. “In the absence of any personal belongings other than the wetsuit he was wearing, no identification documents or vehicles nearby, we began by working with neighboring police forces to conduct checks for missing or wanted people who had not been traced. “When this was unsuccessful, we extended our inquiries to contact all UK forces, ran searches through the Police National Database, and issued bulletins to police overseas through Interpol.

We have also searched DNA, fingerprint and dental records for potential matches, and issued public and media appeals for information.

Each time we have reached out to the public, we’ve been provided with some lines of inquiry to follow-up on, but unfortunately none have proven to be the key to finding out who this person is.

I urge anyone who thinks they might recognize him to come forward.

This is someone’s family member – someone’s loved one – and I would like nothing more than to return him to his loved ones who might be missing him.

Anyone who visited Claerwen Reservoir between July and October 18 2024 and saw anything that might help inquiries, or is aware of someone who has not been seen for some time and matches the description, can contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.”

If you would like to pass on information anonymously please contact crime stoppers on 0800 555 111 where you can submit information without being identified.

It is now down to us, the public to provide assistance to help this man get his name back, he is someone’s son, maybe he is someone’s dad, brother, uncle, lover or friend. The thing is we don’t know, so lets get him identified, lets get him home.
