Case Number: 05-017902

It has been 36 years since the body of a oriental male was found in the River Thames Near HMS Belfast in Southwark. Since that day on June 18th 1989 there has been no true lead as to who this man might be and where he came from.

For 36 years he has laid in a unmarked grave, laid to rest without a name and as science and technology get better and better it’s cases like these that really do have a chance of being solved.

From what we know the unknown oriental male was of thin build, 5ft 9 inches, with black hair and he was clean shaven. His clothing indicates that he may have visited a number of shops on the UK high street, with BHS and M&S being known brand labels on the unidentified mans clothing. This may indicate that he wasn’t a tourist and that the UK high street was a popular choice for the unidentified male.

He wasn’t in the water for long and the UKMPU estimate that he may have been in the water upto 3 days prior to being found (15th june 1989). His body was badly decomposed and this may be due to the weather conditions with June being notriously hot for the UK, this made identification for this male a lot harder.

His age was esitmaated at 20 – 45 years old, and the clothing suggests someone that was of a particular style. It is not known if the unknown male wore the yellow tortoise shell glassses for fashion or if he wore them to help reduce light glare or other reasons.

Why did he have a pair of scissors? I find this quite intresting, was he doing errands, or was he using them to protect himself?

Why were his glasses found in his back pocket? and why was one of the lenses missing? it could be that he had damaged them prior to entering the thames, maybe someone else damaged them in a scuffle and that’s why he had the scissors. There doesn’t seem to be any reports of injuries published in the missing persons unit so this theory is quite a light one.

I think sometimes we can read too much into peoples possesions and fashion choices and make judgements and theories using our own biases. I think it’s always a point to remember that somewhere there is a family out there who doesn’t know he is here, that we care and we want to give him his name back.
